Mahindra is gearing up to launch the 2023 Thar and the UV maker has removed certain features from the off-roader ahead of the launch of the Scorpio N. The cost-cutting measures could be a result of the massive wait the compact SUV has experienced since imposes the launch.

First of all, the new Thar loses the beautiful metallic ash wood finish in the center of both the front and rear bumpers. It just has a solid black finish. The company would have continued with this step to reduce the paint costs of the bumpers.

All the while, the Thar was supplied with factory fitted Ceat CZAR AT tires in 2 configurations: 255/65 R18 and 245/75 R16. The company also offered the MRF Wanderer AT in the same configurations in select batches. Both tires are of premium quality.

But now the compact SUV is fitted with all-new Ceat Crossdrive AT tires. They look brand new and have yet to be launched in the country by Ceat. We also don’t know if premium are not. But since the Thar loses stuff, these tires might be a little cheaper.

While the new Thar gets a dedicated armrest for the driver’s seat, it loses adjustable lumbar support because the knob has gotten the mist. However, there is a neck pillow and we think it could be one of the optional accessories.

Finally, the new Thar has lost the fast-charging USB connection. It now only has the regular USB charger. However, the usual 12-volt socket has been retained. Previously, the compact SUV lost the rear bumper placeholders.

Other than these updates, the 2023 Thar remains more or less the same as before. It is powered by the 2-litre mStallion 150 TGDi petrol engine or the 2.2-litre mHawk 130 diesel engine. The petrol engine delivers 150 hp and 320 Nm, while the diesel engine delivers 130 hp and 300 Nm.

Interestingly, unlike many other cars, the petrol variants of the Thar are the top end and the diesel variants are the lower end. This is because Mahindra puts a lot of effort into its mStallion range of engines. The petrol engine also delivers more power and torque.

The Mahindra Thar is now almost devoid of competition and the Force Gurkha barely fights. Force even delayed the launch of the BS-6 model and the car was out of stock for months, scaring off potential buyers.

But this situation is expected to change as Maruti Suzuki gears up to launch the new Jimny in India in mid-2023. The upcoming SUV may even get diesel engines. It will be localized to 70 percent for an aggressive price tag against the Thar.
