5 upcoming open-world games for the rest of 2022

Open world games tend to be some of the biggest video games released, generally developed and published by major studios. While open world games aren’t just limited to AAA titles, more often than not they fall under that umbrella. With vast, diverse and inhabited worlds that seem very close to reality than expected, these games can of course keep players entertained for days.

2022 has already had a number of major releases, many of which are already open world titles, such as Horizon Forbidden West, Tunic and Elden Ring. As the second half of the year approaches, players are now looking to the coming months to see what they’ll be laying on the table.

5 open world games to be released in the next 6 months

1) Sonic Limits

Sonic Frontiers, developed by Sonic Team and published by SEGA, is expected to be released in the fourth quarter of 2022, possibly close to Halloween or Christmas. This is the first time in the Sonic series that they’ve gone for an open-world approach, with the map spread over several islands.

Platform and ring collection returns along with gravel rails as Sonic, Tails and Amy Rose are transported to the Starfall Islands. These islands will have a variety of landscapes including fields, forests, ruins and deserts. The bigger story is unclear so far, but it does involve collecting the Chaos Emeralds.

The open-world gameplay has been compared by writers to Breath of the Wild, with maps featuring many traditional elements such as springs, boosts, and grind rails. Robot enemies are also on the map, with Sonic being able to perform attacks as well as jump and sidestep during combat.

2) Saints Row

Serving as a reboot of the franchise and to bring the game back to its grounded roots, Saints Row is an upcoming open world game set to be released on August 23, 2022. Developed by veterans of the Volition series and published by Deep Silver, this action-adventure game is set in the fictional city of Santo Ileso.

In this game, players take on the role of the boss as they aim to create a new gang to seize control of the city. They must start by befriending three people named Neenah, Kevin and Eli, who will later grow into a new realm, soon to be called The Saints.

In terms of gameplay, the latest installment doesn’t seem to have anything new to offer, with a third-person camera perspective and behavior much like the previous Saints Row titles, minus the superpowers. Despite this, the game feels very faithful to older, more popular games in the series, so time will tell if the storyline will be any good.

3) Pronounced

Forspoken, an upcoming game from developer Luminous Productions and published by Square Enix, will be released on October 11, 2022. Following an original, unique storyline, this brand new open-world game is set in the realm of Athia, a diverse land with a variety of different areas ruled by the oppressive Tantas.

It is here that main character Frey Holland is taken after she is magically whisked away from her very normal life in New York City. After befriending a magical talking bracelet known as Cuff, Frey discovers that she now has access to several magical abilities.

The gameplay of this open world game is seemingly focused on the speed and fluidity of the terrain, as noted by the game director. Combat involves the use of various magical offensive abilities, such as elemental powers. Movement will also be a key factor in combat, requiring players to remain mobile and make good use of Frey’s parkour skills.

4) Gotham Knights

Set in the vast, living and breathing Gotham City, Gotham Knights is being developed by WB Games Montreal and will be released on October 25, 2022. players can ride through the densely populated city streets with the Batcycle or ride over the rooftops with other modes of transportation.

Currently, the game features four playable characters, namely Batgirl, Nightwing, Red Hood, and Robin. Each character has different combat skills and a moveset, as well as another characteristic to move you in this open-world game. The game’s combat seems relatively simple and lacks the complexity of the Arkham games comparable to Insomniac’s Marvel’s Spider-Man.

The story is set after an incident where Batman is killed, with his former teammates returning to the city to fight against various criminal elements. The game features many villains from Batman’s ‘Rogues Gallery’, as well as the first-ever appearance of the criminal organization Court of Owls in a video game.

5) Hogwarts: Legacy

Set in the magical world of Harry Potter, Hogwarts Legacy is set to be released in late 2022 and is being developed by Avalanche Software. This open world game mainly takes place on the grounds of Hogwarts and surrounding areas such as the village of Hogsmeade and the Shrieking Shack.

Players take on the role of a new fifth-year student who enrolls in the iconic School of Witchcraft and Wizardry in the 19th century. The player’s character will play a vital role in the unfolding of a mystery while stirring up a strange forgotten magic, which “could tear the wizarding world apart”.

As an RPG, the game allows players to groom their character as they see fit, while taking classes at Hogwarts and learning new spells. Taming and caring for magical beasts also plays a role in the gameplay, while a morality system determines whether the player can cast certain curses such as the Killing curse, Avada Kedavra.
