Johannesburg:

A gang of gunmen broke into a video clip and raped eight young women from the cast in a small South African town this week, police said Friday.

Security forces have so far arrested three of about 20 suspects in connection with Thursday’s attack on the outskirts of Krugersdorp, a small town west of Johannesburg, police minister Bheki Cele said.

The gang attacked and threw the crew as they unloaded equipment and prepared the set, he told reporters.

The women were between the ages of 18 and 35, Cele said, adding that one woman was raped by 10 men and another by eight.

Even the men were stripped naked and robbed of their personal belongings, he told reporters on the sidelines of a ruling party conference in Johannesburg.

“It looks like they’re foreigners, actually they’re zama zamas,” he said, referring to people illegally exploiting mines in the country.

President Cyril Ramaphosa told the same conference that he instructed the police minister to ensure that the perpetrators were “arrested and dealt with.”

Rape is grossly under-reported in South Africa, but on average, the country is reported to the police every 12 minutes.
