Aamir Khan has said in a new interview that his son Junaid Khan had auditioned for the lead role in Laal Singh Chaddha. He said it didn’t go well because Aditya Chopra and Atul Kulkarni were unsure whether a newcomer could fill the role.

Actor Aamir Khan is currently gearing up for the release of his upcoming film Laal Singh Chaddha. Recently, Aamir revealed in an interview that his son Junaid Khan also auditioned for the lead role, but didn’t get it because Aditya Chopra and Atul Kulkarni thought a newcomer could fill the role. Laal Singh Chaddha, adapted by Atul Kulkarni and directed by Advait Chandan, is an official Hindi remake of Robert Zemeckis’ 1994 Oscar-winning film Forrest Gump, starring Hollywood star Tom Hanks in the title role. Laal Singh Chaddha is said to be unfolding some of the historical events in India through the eyes of a man. The film starring Kareena Kapoor and Naga Chaitanya will hit theaters on August 11.

In an interview with TV9, Aamir Khan revealed that Laal Singh Chaddha’s character needed innocence and he felt that Junaid was suitable for the role. “Junaid (Khan), became Laal while playing him. Some actors are skilled, they know their art and they perform very well. While the others become the characters they play. Junaid became one. My confidence was shaken after seeing his performance while I had confidence for him. I no longer have that innocence and he naturally did. Since he was my son, I showed the clips to Aditya Chopra, Karan Johar and Raju Hirani just to be sure. We must have shown it to about a hundred people from the industry and family. All those people who were trusted in their taste, sensitivity and intelligence were shown the clips. I wanted to know if she also saw what I saw there. About 98 of those people came forward with full support.”

He added: “However, Aditya Chopra and Atul Kulkarni, the writer of the film, objected. They wanted me to play the character. According to them, the story of the Forrest Gump is not that solid. It’s an episodic movie that requires a star. A new actor can’t pull this off. I finally bought their reasoning. Sometimes you may be very good, but the time is not right.”

Junaid is the eldest son of Aamir Khan and his ex-wife Reena Dutta. The former couple also has a daughter named Ira Khan. Junaid marks his debut with Maharaja, the film hit the shelves last year. Shalini Pandey, Sharvari Wagh and Jaideep Ahlawat will also be seen in Maharaja.
