When Achinta Sheuli won the third gold in the ongoing Commonwealth Games, his brother said that no one knew until now that a boy from a village in Bengal took part in the global sports competition. He said the state’s sports minister also seemed ignorant and government support was needed for budding athletes to thrive.

On Sunday, Sheuli took gold in the men’s 73kg final at the CWG 2022 in Birmingham. Soon after, tweets of praise poured in from across the country for the young athlete who is a havildar in the Indian Army.

However, his brother Alok said they are yet to see how much money Achinta will receive for his achievement. “In 2020, the state government awarded an award, no one knows that a boy from our village participated in CWG. Even the sports minister seems ignorant, we need government support. We have yet to see how much money they will give for it,” Alok Sheuli told the news agency ANI.

Meanwhile, these villagers celebrated their local boy’s golden victory on the global platform whose visuals were shared by the news agency.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised the young athlete in a tweet and said he hopes Sheuli will finally have time to watch a movie now that a medal has been won. “Glad that the talented Achinta Sheuli has won a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games. He is known for his calm disposition and tenacity. He has worked very hard for this special achievement. I wish him the best of luck for his future endeavors.”
