Annu Kapoor on Arundhati Roy: ‘She has betrayed the country several times’ | Web Series

Annu Kapoor has been working as an actor for more than four decades, but joining the entertainment industry was never his dream. Annu, whose maternal grandfather, paternal grandfather and uncles were revolutionaries during India’s struggle for independence, wanted to serve his motherland. The actor had earned 93% percent in his class 12 exam, but his parents did not have the financial background to support his dreams of becoming an IAS, and Annu instead had to join his father’s theater company to to help support the family. In a recent conversation with Hindustan Times, Annu said he could not fulfill his dreams of becoming an IAS officer but takes his job as an actor very seriously to serve his motherland. But getting into politics is far from his mind.

He said: “I’m not fit for politics. I don’t have the talent to be a politician. In one of my shows I explained what the literal meaning of a politician is. Poly means many and in a latent jargon, tician means” rengne waale keede (crawling insects). Politicians whether those in the judiciary or bureaucracy, all people are by-products of our system. And unfortunately our system is one of the most corrupt, hypocritical and pretentious systems in the world. I worry not worried about Switzerland, America or Guatemala, I’m worried about India. And I take my motherland very seriously and I feel very sad about it.”

In another part of the interview, Annu spoke of Booker Prize-winning author Arundhati Roy, accusing her of betraying India. Speaking about OTT platforms and acting, the actor said: “Those who are on top of OTT, with all due respect, come from the advertising world – who want to show everything in one minute. In the advertising world, you have to sell those things that have no quality. You try to sell a false world. And I think even cinema is like that. In cinema you ask an actor, who is a person, to be unreal to portray a character, but to make it real to make it look like Amanda (me, the interviewer) is an actress. This is your real self. I’ve hired you as an actor and I’m asking you to be unreal, play the part of Arundhati Roy, and be real too. This is acting.”

He added: “Well I just take the name of that lady Arundhati Roy, with all due respect to her, she has betrayed the country several times.”

Annu will next be featured in the Amazon Prime Video web series Crash Course as the owner of an educational institute in Kota, Rajasthan. The series, directed by Vijay Maurya and written by Manish Hariprasad, will premiere on the OTT platform on August 5.
