The 2022 edition of the Asia Cup has officially moved from Sri Lanka to the UAE. Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) will host the major multi-nation tournament, which will be played in the Middle East of Asia on the originally scheduled days between August 27 and September 11.
As reported by Cricbuzz on July 17, the decision was made to move the tournament from Sri Lanka due to the ongoing political turmoil in the country.
“Given the prevailing situation in Sri Lanka, the ACC has unanimously concluded after extensive deliberation that it would be appropriate to move the tournament from Sri Lanka to the UAE,” said a press release from the Asian Cricket Council.
Sri Lanka recently received Australia on a bilateral contract and is currently working with Pakistan for a test series. But in the past two weeks, things have changed dramatically: the country’s president has fled and a new president has been installed. The country is on the boil with protests against the political establishment.
“We were really looking forward to welcoming our Asian neighbors to Sri Lanka for the highly anticipated Asia Cup,” said SLC President Shammi Silva. “While I fully support the ACC’s decision to move the Asian Cup to the UAE, given the current context and scale of the event, Sri Lanka cricket will work closely with the ACC and the Emirates Cricket Board to ensure that we still have an exciting edition of the Asian Cup”
This year’s six-team Asia Cup will be played in the T20 format as a precursor to the T20 World Cup in Australia. The UAE also hosted the previous edition of the tournament, in the ODI format in 2018, an event that was won by India.
