Barcelona confirm plans to play at Olympic Stadium in 2023-24 season

Barcelona president Joan Laporta on Tuesday confirmed the club’s plans to play at the Olympic Stadium in Montjuic in the 2023-24 season.

The Catalan giants will have to vacate their famous Camp Nou stadium as much-needed renovations are underway on their home grounds.

Work is due to start this summer, but Barcelona will be able to play at home in 2022-23 before making the switch. Laporta also confirmed that the Olympic Stadium will receive a rapid facelift before the team arrives.

He explains: “We are committed to adapting the Olympic facilities to ensure comfort on race day, and we will modernize some areas and services such as the press box, the changing rooms and an internal car park. But the facilities are very good, in very good condition.”

The Olympic Stadium has a capacity of 60,713 people and was previously home to Barcelona’s local rivals Espanyol. It is the fifth largest stadium in Spain and was also the site of the 1992 Olympic Games.

Barcelona’s renovation work on the Camp Nou is expected to take approximately four years and the capacity will increase from 99,000 to 110,000.

The changes will also include a retractable roof covered with solar panels and a 360-degree screen that will wrap around the entire interior of the stadium.
