Despite Jules Kunde’s recent capture, Barcelona are not yet done with their transfer market activity, even in the defensive division.
According to a report by Diario SPORT, the club is actively trying to convince Inigo Martinez to go to Camp Nou. But they are not keen on signing him during the pending summer transfer window and have instead asked him to wait a year.
Barca are aware that Martinez’s contract with Athletic Club will expire after the end of next season. As such, they will be able to take him on a free transfer in 2023.
However, Athletic Club is determined to avoid such a situation. They are trying to get him to renew his contract with the club, although the player has so far rejected their proposals.
On Wednesday, Athletic Club is expected to have an important meeting with Inigo Martinez regarding his future at the club. It’s no secret that the defender will be tempted to move to Barcelona, and his club is unlikely to step up their efforts if the player rejects further proposals.
It should clear the way for Barcelona to complete him on a free transfer. It has been a key feature in the club’s market activity in recent years, although the club have spent a fortune on their recent acquisitions, which include Kounde and Robert Lewandowski, among a few others.
Nevertheless, the addition of Inigo Martinez to the club could further strengthen Barca’s defense line, especially as Gerard Pique faces an uncertain future at the club.
But with Athletic Club keen to retain the defender’s services, it will be interesting to see how things play out in the coming weeks.
