Battery boom at Webasto: new customers, new plants, new orders

Webasto’s activities in the field of electromobility solutions – especially battery systems – are becoming more successful by the day. The supplier shows its product portfolio at the Battery Show Europe in Stuttgart.

Webasto has successfully established itself in the electromobility market. The battery sector in particular is gaining momentum. Visitors can learn more about the product portfolio at the Battery Show Europe in Stuttgart (June 28-30) by visiting the booth of the top 100 car suppliers. It will include a sample of Webasto’s first passenger car battery. It has been produced since April 2022 at the new battery factory in Dangjin, South Korea.

The passenger car battery for Webasto customer Hyundai-Kia Motors Corporation (HKMC) will be available in two different variants, namely the long-haul version with a capacity of 68.7 kWh and a base version offering 50.9 kWh.

Standard battery for commercial vehicles

The standard Webasto battery for commercial vehicles will also be on display at the fair. It is produced at the technology plant in Schierling, Germany. Significantly more than 20 customers have now placed their trust in the standard battery system, which combines the price advantages of a scalable mass-market product with the precision fit of a custom solution. Depending on the configuration, it can be used in both 400- and 800-volt systems.

The robust design also makes the standard battery ideal for use in construction equipment. Diesel vehicles generally have a very high fuel consumption, therefore battery-electric models or partially electrified vehicles will be increasingly used in this segment in the future. Webasto recently collaborated with the Dutch start-up ECE, among others, and converted the first excavators to electric vehicles.

New interface alternative

Since June, in addition to the Vehicle Interface Box (VIB), Webasto has also been offering the Vehicle Interface Gateway (VIG) – which, among other things, provides the electrical interconnection of the battery systems – as an interface between the standard battery system and the vehicle. With this, a maximum of nine battery packs in a 400-volt system and a maximum of 18 batteries in an 800-volt system can be controlled, for a total capacity of 630 kWh. Thanks to its compact design, it is also suitable for vehicles with smaller installation spaces. “Our customers need to be able to design their battery system as flexibly as possible. The VIG offers even more possibilities, especially in terms of space and capacity, to meet the respective requirements,” says Sebastian Fuchs, Product Manager Batteries at Webasto.

In addition to battery systems, Webasto will also exhibit the Webasto Next charging station at the Battery Show. This enables intelligent and efficient charging of electric vehicles in residential and commercial environments up to 22 kilowatts (kW).

E-mobility success story

The huge investments in e-mobility and the transformation that the company has embarked on are starting to pay off for Webasto: in addition to two large-scale projects for Hyundai-Kia, the supplier received its first battery order from a German car manufacturer at the start of the year. An additional factory is being built in Europe to realize this assignment.

All in all, the two most recent battery orders alone are worth more than a billion euros. This means that orders in the e-mobility segment for the first three months of 2022 have now for the first time overtaken those of the established core businesses of roofing, heating and cooling solutions.
