The Big Bash League has introduced a concept system to choose foreign players in the upcoming edition. Teams will have to choose a minimum of two and a maximum of three via the draft system. With the nominations open, the design is expected to take place sometime in the coming months.

There are four categories in which players can be nominated: Platinum, Gold, Silver and Bronze. Each category has a different payment with platinum as the highest bracket.

A statement from BBL further explained the draft process as:

Draft order

The Draft order will be decided by weighted lottery.

The three teams that miss the final of KFC BBL|11 will participate in the first weighted lottery to determine the selections one, two and three.

The five finalists from last season will then be drawn for selections four through eight.

Draft rounds

The Draft will consist of four rounds with one pick per club in each round.

Clubs can choose to fit in certain rounds, but each club must choose a minimum of two and a maximum of three players at the end of round four.

The first round is for Platinum players only and will follow the draft order drawn via the method above. Round two follows the same sequence as round one, then rounds three and four follow a pendulum sequence.

Retention Choices

Each club is entitled to one Retention Pick that can be used in each round of the Draft.

A player is eligible for retention if he has played a match for that club the previous season.

Total Players and Substitutions

Each club’s BBL squad will consist of 18 players, including two or three foreign players from the Draft and the rest are domestic players.

After the Draft, clubs can sign up to five replacement foreign players. A player must be nominated for the Draft to be an eligible foreign player unless approved by the League.
