Many people choose veganism to protect animals. They restrict themselves from consuming animal products such as meat, eggs, milk and so on. Since it’s pretty clear that animal products are the best source of protein, many people still don’t consume them. They switch to vegetable protein sources. But is it as effective as the animal protein? Recently, a study suggested that proteins from the plant-based meat alternatives may not be as accessible to human cells as those from real meat.

The study published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry suggested that fake meats, such as vegetarian meats made up of soybeans, do not provide enough nutrition to the human cells compared to the real meat. The study was conducted in a lab setting where the group of researchers grew a layer of human intestinal cells on a platform further divided into two chambers. They then used enzymes from vegetable meat and chicken breasts to see the protein absorption in both chambers separately. Then the digestion process was examined by researchers at Ohio State University. In four hours, they noticed that about two percent less protein traveled from the vegetable meat and transferred through the intestinal cells compared to the protein from the chicken breast.

As quoted by the science news portal New Scientist, “While plant-based meat alternatives contain fewer peptides, they still provide a good amino acid profile and can be an adequate addition to a well-balanced diet,” the researchers said. Osvaldo Campanella and Da Chen. Not only this, the researchers also want to look for ingredients that can help boost peptide absorption from plant-based meat substitutes.
