Chelsea are in talks to sign Marc Cucurella from Brighton & Hove Albion. the athletic understands.
There is no agreement between the Premier League clubs yet, but talks are underway.
Cucurella, 24, was also a target for reigning Premier League champions Manchester City.
However, the athletic reported last week that Brighton has ended their talks with City about a sale and will only accept an offer that meets their asking price.
Cucurella filed a transfer request on Friday, although that reportedly did not change Brighton’s stance. They want compensation in excess of £50 million (€59.5 million, $60.8 million).
Chelsea are working on a review of their defense before the summer transfer window closes on September 1.
They are also working on deals to acquire Leicester City’s Wesley Fofana and Inter Milan’s Denzel Dumfries.
Leicester is believed to value centre-back Fofana at a figure in the region of £80million to £85million ($97million to $103million), but Chelsea hope this can be reduced by offering players to their top-mates .
Meanwhile, Inter have to fundraise this summer – especially after talks with Paris Saint-Germain over Milan Skriniar stalled over their price demands – and Chelsea’s admiration for the right-back is high.
