Tensions in the Taiwan Strait are high as House Speaker Nancy Pelosi visits Taiwan. A video that has gone viral on social media shows tanks on the beaches of Xiamen city, which sits across the Taiwan Strait. The video on Reddit shows beachgoers surrounded by a line of tanks moving forward. Xiamen, in the Chinese province of Fujian, is only 300 kilometers away from the island of Taiwan. Global times said in a report that Xiamen Airlines has “modified” dozens of its flights citing air traffic control commands.

The images have neatly received 17,000 votes on Reddit since they were posted on Tuesday. Users are shocked to see the deployment of such heavy troops that have turned the region into a geopolitical flashpoint.

“Can you imagine your sandcastle being destroyed because of geopolitics?” asked Reddit users. “The display of power is more for their citizens than for Taiwan,” added another.

A Xiamen resident said: South China Morning Post (SCMP) that since Sunday he had seen several dozen military vehicles of various types roll into the city and drive towards the main ring road.

Chen Jinhuo, a restaurant owner, added that there are “about a hundred” armored vehicles parked on the main ring road.

The China Maritime Safety Administration has announced military training in the waters of the South China Sea from Tuesday to Saturday, banning access to the area.

Taiwan said these military exercises are breaking the island’s territorial waters. “This is an irrational move to challenge international order,” Defense Ministry spokesman Sun Li-fang said at a news conference on Tuesday.

The trip of Ms. Pelosi, second in line to the presidency and the most prominent elected US official in 25 years to visit Taiwan, has unleashed a diplomatic firestorm.
