Lovely Choubey was a promising long jumper from Jharkhand in her youth, she represented East Zone and dreamed of representing India. Born a Class 4 employee of the Central Mine Design Limited, with very little to help her aspirations, Lovely hoped that sport would help her take off in life, such as in the sandbox. It also led to her trainer subjecting her to too strict a regimen and injuring her hips. She was distraught and miserable for a few months before Bihar’s then cricket umpire Madhukant Pathak invited her to try out lawn bowls. Now a Jharkhand police officer, Lovely found the gentle rolling pace and calming rhythm of lawn bowls an oasis for her shattered self-confidence. She knew nothing about it, but was always a smart brain, and started cracking with the nuanced angles of rolling the bowls around the Jack of the game, the target ball.
