Mirabai Chanu delivered on the promise and won India’s first gold medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games. Chanu lifted a total of 201 kg to win the yellow metal in women’s 49 kg weightlifting, which is India’s third medal of the Sports day was delivered earlier in the day after Sanket Sargar (Silver) and Gururaja (Bronze). Chanu, who had won the gold medal at the 2018 CWG in Australia’s Gold Coast, was miles ahead of the competition when she picked up 88kg in snatch and 113kg in clean and jerk.
Due to her excellent performance in the snatch round, setting the new Commonwealth record, Mirabai just had to complete her first attempt in the clean and jerk round and she did it with confidence, lifting 105kg.
Confident of gold, she lifted 113 kg in her second attempt. She tried 119kg in her third but couldn’t complete the lift but it didn’t matter as she took her second Commonwealth Games gold medal.
Mirabai swept through the event, lifting 29kg more than Mauritius’s Roilya Ranaivosoa (76kg + 96kg), who won silver.
Canada’s Hannah Kaminsky took home the bronze medal, with a total weight of 171 kg (74 kg + 97 kg).
Mirabai is one of the most decorated weightlifters in India. She already had a Commonwealth Games silver (2014) and gold (2018) in her cat before winning the yellow metal again in 2022. She also won a gold medal at the 2017 World Championships and also holds several Commonwealth Championships medals and an Asian Championships medal.
The pinnacle of her career came in Tokyo last year when she became India’s first silver medalist in weightlifting at the Olympics, improving on the bronze medal won by Karnam Malleswari in Sydney 2000.
