The Bangladesh pace bowling unit was criticized for leaking runs in the opening match when the fast bowling trio of Mustafizur Rahman, Shoriful Islam and Taskin Ahmed allowed 137 runs in their combined 12 overs, resulting in a collective economy of 11.41. Zimbabwe eventually posted a record total of 205 and drew first blood in the series by winning the match by 17 runs. Taskin didn’t play the second T20I while Mustafizur and Shoriful had a combined economy of 8.38 in the game Bangladesh won by 7 wickets to level the series.

Bangladesh bowling coach Allan Donald said the bowlers have to be smart to do well in T20 format, calling it a 24-ball puzzle for the bowlers. “South Africa recently went all out for just 90 runs against England. So T20 is one of those games that teaches you hard lessons. And in this game I see a 24 ball puzzle that you have to solve and that’s street smart,” said donald.

“That’s something we teach and put a lot of emphasis on. I think it’s the small steps that matter because I don’t care what kind of team you’re on. Yesterday we had a good start. We have to do it that tomorrow [Tuesday] and we have shown how smart we can be and we expect to recover as we did in the last game on Sunday. Look, it’s the final tomorrow and it’s played on the pitch of the first game and it should be a blast of a game and I’m looking forward to it,” he said.

Donald said he is impressed by the composure of pace bowler Hasan Mahmud. The fast right arm made his international debut against Zimbabwe in 2020, but was sidelined due to an injury. He spent nearly a year in rehabilitation before making a comeback in domestic cricket through the Dhaka Premier League, Bangladesh’s List A tournament, and made a comeback in international cricket in the second T20I against Zimbabwe, taking 1 picked 26 in his four overs.

“I was particularly impressed with Hasan Mahmud because I heard so much about this young boy. He showed great skill and what I like about him is his overall character and his calm demeanor. I’ve been here for a year and a half and he’s a sweet boy. He’s a big strong boy and it’s nice to work with him,” said Donald.
