“Even If He Scores A 50, People Say He’s Failed”: Mohammed Azharuddin On Virat Kohli

Virat Kohli recently went through a lean spell in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 and hasn’t made it a century in international cricket since November 2019. However, former India captain Mohammed Azharuddin has backed the star batter to bounce back strongly, saying he just needs one big score to regain his confidence. He also said that due to the high standards Kohli has set for himself with his past performances, even half a century of his at bat is considered a subpar innings.

“What happens to Virat Kohli is that even if he scores a 50, people say he has failed,” Azharuddin told reporters in Dubai by Khaleej Times.

“I think it happens to every cricketer. Even the best players have gone through these lean periods,” he continued.

“There’s nothing wrong with his technique. Sometimes you just need a little luck,” Azharuddin said.

“If he gets one big score, a big hundred, the aggression and confidence will come back,” he claimed.

Kohli is equipped for India’s upcoming T20 International (T20I) series of five games against South Africa and will next see action in the one-off test against England in July.

In IPL 2022, Kohli scored 341 runs from 16 games with a dismal success rate of 115.99. He scored just two half-centuries and failed to make the play-offs when Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) was knocked out by Rajasthan Royals in Qualifier 2.
