Ford Workers strike: Workers at Ford’s Chennai plant go on strike

Chennai: More than 2,000 workers are on strike at the Ford plant, leading to a shutdown of production at the plant since May 30, sources said Thursday. The workers demand better compensation.

“We have been on strike since Monday and there has been no production in the unit since. We have asked for a better compensation package that management is not willing to accept…,” a union official told PTI.

According to the union official, some workers have gone on strike at the sprawling facility in Maraimalai Nagar, about 40 kilometers from here, while others are protesting outside the unit.

“This time we have decided to go ahead with the strike as the severance payment will take at least 15 days to settle. And June 30 is expected to be the last working day, we have resorted to the strike in advance,” said he. †

When contacted, a Ford spokesperson told PTI that the production shutdown since Monday at the Chennai vehicle assembly plant is “unfortunate” amid ongoing discussions with union representatives about all outstanding issues, including “compensation”.

“Given the ongoing nature of discussions with the union, we may not be able to share details at this time and will share more at a later date,” the spokesperson said.

The workers were out shortly after the auto major announced in September 2021 that it would halt production of vehicles at its two plants – Sanand in Gujarat and Maraimalai Nagar near Chennai in Tamil Nadu – as part of the restructuring. excercise.

According to an employee, the negotiations with the management proceeded at a “snail’s pace”.

“As there is doubt that all their demands will be fully met, we have joined the strike…”, he said.

According to another employee, the requirement is to pay 300 days as compensation, but management can negotiate and settle for less.

“They (management) want the settlement package to be much lower, which is against our demand. But because of the strike, we hope they can change their position,” he said.

According to industry sources, the Tamil Nadu government expected the Ford plant in Chennai to be taken over by another automaker, but no positive results have been achieved so far, leading to uncertainty over the workers’ future.

announced the signing of a tripartite pact with Ford and the Gujarat government to take over the US auto major’s auto plant in Sanand.
