The US has announced its 14-man roster for the upcoming 2022 T20 World Cup Qualifiers to be held in Zimbabwe from July 11. Former Tasmania and Melbourne Renegades paceman Cameron Stevenson enters the T20I squad for the first time after returning to the ODI squad last month. Sushant Modani, who was a Covid replacement in the last series against Ireland, kept his spot after a half-century debut.

Modani impressed later in the just concluded ODI season with three half-centuries and a century in eight games. New Jersey’s teenage leg spinner Yasir Mohammad also held onto his spot after being one of the other covid substitutes in the US’s previous T20I outing against Ireland.

Left-turning all-rounder Karima Gore, fast bowler Jasdeep Singh and Xavier Marshall, however, were overlooked by the squad. Gore’s lockout may raise eyebrows after his 31-off 15-ball match-winning cameo against Canada helped the US take pole position in the Americas Qualifiers for the 2022 T20 World Cup. Marshall was given the ax after a scratching 4 off 11 innings in his lone game against Ireland. There was also no place for Ritwik Behera, Ryan Scott and Ali Sheikh who were called to the side in the Ireland series after the Covid outbreak. Jaskaran Malhotra, who has struggled to find playing time since his whirlwind Oman tour due to Covid and injuries, has been added to the roster after recovering from a broken finger that left him missing two home ODI series in the US.

Allrounder Ian Holland will remain free from national service due to his obligations with Hampshire. The Netherlands brought an integral balance with bat and ball in the USA’s unbeaten run in the American qualifiers. Buoyed by their historic T20I win against Ireland and recent wins over Scotland and Oman in 50-over cricket, the USA are in line to qualify for their first-ever T20 World Cup. They are grouped with Jersey, Singapore and Zimbabwe with two of the four teams going through to the semi-finals. A semi-final victory is enough for the Monank Patel-led side to make history and create ripples in the cricketing world.

USA squad:Monank Patel (Captain), Aaron Jones (Vice Captain), Ali Khan, Cameron Stevenson, Gajanand Singh, Jaskaran Malhotra, Marty Kain, Nisarg Patel, Rusty Theron, Saurabh Netravalkar, Steven Taylor, Sushant Modani, Yasir Mohammed, Vatsal Vaghela
