Former Skipper’s Message to Rahul Tewatia-‘Instead of Twitter, Focus & Perform’

India chose their 15-man squad for the Ireland tour, where they will play a two-match T20I series against the hosts. The team caused many surprises as Hardik Pandya was promoted to skipper and Bhuvneshwar Kumar became his deputy. They also chose Rahul Tripathi, Sanju Samson and Surya Kumar Yadav, which gives a fresh look to the middle class of India. Meanwhile, it did not bear the name of the other Rahul (Tewatia) who tweeted to express his frustration and went viral in the process.

When former India captain Sunil Gavaskar was asked who he would have liked in that squad, his answer was obvious.

“Rahul Tewatia, the ice man. I mean, he should have been… sometimes if there’s a touch and go situation, maybe take an extra member. Instead of 15, take 16. Because it’s hard to leave someone who has always done well,” he told Star Sports during the rain break.

“And he was fantastic, he won matches that seem lost (in IPL 2022). He went there, crushed the ball. He also moved very intelligently across the fold. In addition, he was able to play over the stump, not just to the side,” he added.

Gavaskar suggested that teams can choose an additional player if needed.

“So someone who shows such a temperament might add a 16th man. And take him to Ireland.”

“I would like to say to Rahul Tewatia, ‘Look, you’re not elected, don’t be put off by it. You are only a little on the margins, work hard and you will be there regularly.”

Meanwhile, former South Africa skipper Graeme Smith gave some suggestions to the youngster, asking him to focus on his game and not Twitter.

“It’s very difficult in India because you have so much talent. And coach Rahul Dravid and captain Rohit Sharma must have picked their majority of the lads to anticipate conditions in Australia.

“I’d say instead of Twitter, focus, perform and next time your time comes, make sure no one can let you out.”

The 29-year-old took to Twitter and shared a two-word post after being overlooked for the Ireland tour, which was enough to explain his emotions.

“Expectations hurt,” Tewatia tweeted.
