Aside from his job as a Member of Parliament, Gambhir somehow remains associated with the Gentleman’s Game. During a media conference on BJP’s 8 years in power, Gambhir was asked about his association with IPL franchises and commentary roles. The cricketer turned politician explained that he must take up those jobs in order to continue the welfare work he does for the poor.

“Why I comment in IPL or work in it is because I spend INR 25 lakh every month to feed 5000 people. This translates to about Rs. 2.75 crore per year. I also spent INR 25 lakh to feed a build a library.
“I am giving all this money out of my own pocket and not from the MPLAD fund. The MPLAD fund does not manage my kitchen or other things I do. I don’t have a tree in my house from which to pick money.
“Just because I work can I feed those 5000 people or start that library. I am not ashamed to say that I comment and work in the IPL. All this I do has an ultimate purpose,” he explained at the media conference.
