Good Luck Jerry starring Janhvi Kapoor has premiered live on Hotstar. The film is the official remake of the Tamil super hit film Kolamaavu Kokila. Let’s see how it is.

Jerry aka Jaya Kumari (Janhvi Kapoor) is a middle-class girl who works in a massage parlor. She lives with her widowed mother Sharbati (Mita Vashist) and a younger sister. Things change when the family learns that Sharbati is suffering from lung cancer. One day, Jerry unexpectedly runs into a drug smuggler who is caught by the police because of her. Timmy (Jaswanth Singh), the smuggler’s leader, threatens Jerry to get back their cocaine that was lost by the police. Jerry does the work. Running out of resources, Jerry decides to get into the drug business because she needs money. Did Jerry make money for her mother’s treatment? Did she survive in the drug trade? This is part of the rest of the story.

Janhvi Kapoor delivered a very good performance as Jerry. She gracefully displayed different emotions that were present in the Jerry character. She has improved a lot from her previous films and has done a commendable job.

The story is promising and offers plenty of leeway. The dark comedy set in a few scenes caused laughter. To name just one, the sequence with Deepak Dobriyal in the second half is hilarious.

The director has managed to tell this crime story by adding humor to it and that is a tough job. The film benefits from great performances from the supporting cast. The pace of the movie is good.

minus points

The director really messed up the climax. It’s rushed and results in a mishmash where the viewers just can’t understand what’s happening. In a few scenes there is ambiguity.

Compared to the first half, the second half loses its power. Newer subplots are woven into the second half by the creators that are not needed. Few scenes seem repetitive.

The emotional angle of the story is not well portrayed. Dark comedy may not be for everyone. The intent of a few characters was not justified at all, leaving the audience baffled.

Technical aspects

While Parag Chabbra’s music isn’t all that great, Aman Pant’s background score is well-tuned and in perfect sync with the movie’s theme. The cinematography of Rangarajan Ramabadran is fine.

The director, Sidharth Sengupta, has done a good job of engaging the audience in this plot in a good mood. Over time, however, he loses control of the procedure. The drama aspect could have been better. The production values are good. The editing is sharp.

In general, Good Luck entertains Jerry in parts. There are hiccups in the execution with new subplots being introduced in the second half. Janhvi and others gave admirable performances that were let down by presentation problems. More care regarding the emotional aspect and the climax part would have made it a better one. Nevertheless, this movie is a decent watch on OTT. Rating: 2.75/5
