No fewer than six smartphones were launched in mid-July 2022. Last week started with the Tecno Spark 9 and OPPO Reno8 series and ended with the Google Pixel 6a hitting the Indian shores as the first Pixel phone in two years. One of the best phones launched this week was the Redmi K50i. Why? Because with the K50i, the fan-favorite Redmi K series returned to India after three years. On the same day as the Redmi K50i, Vivo launched the Vivo T1x.
With so many smartphone launches in a week, it can be hard to keep up with what’s happening in the tech world. That’s why in this article we’ll be summarizing every handset launched between July 18 and July 21. Have a look.
Techno Spark 9
Tecno Spark 9, launched on July 18, is an entry-level phone priced at Rs 9,499. This less than Rs 10,000 smartphone comes with up to 11 GB of RAM and a 90 Hz display, which is unusual in this segment. Powered by a MediaTek Helio G37 chip, the Spark 9 comes with a 5,000 mAh battery. You get 128 GB of internal storage with 6 GB of RAM, expandable to 11 GB via 5 GB of virtual RAM. Photography on Tecno Spark 9 is provided by a 13 MP dual rear camera.
OPPO Reno8 Series
July 18 also saw the Indian debut of the OPPO Reno8 series; two months after being introduced to the Chinese market. While the China OPPO Reno8 series has three handsets – OPPO Reno8, Reno8 Pro and Reno8 Pro+, the Indian lineup includes two smartphones – OPPO Reno8 and Reno8 Pro. For those who know, OPPO Reno8 Pro+ came to India in the disguise of OPPO Reno8 Pro. Priced from Rs 29,999, the Reno8 is available in Shimmer Gold and Shimmer Black colors while the Reno8 Pro – in Glazed Green and Glazed Black colors – will set you back Rs 45,999 (starting price).
OPPO Reno8 Specifications
OPPO Reno8 shows off a 6.43-inch Full-HD + AMOLED 90Hz panel that gets fuel from a MediaTek Dimensity 1300 chip with a 4,500mAh battery that supports 80W SUPERVOOC charging. It packs up to 12 GB of RAM and 256 GB of storage. For photography, you get a 32MP selfie camera, and the MariSilicon X-powered triple rear camera includes a 50MP primary, 2MP secondary, and 2MP third lens.
OPPO Reno8 Pro Specifications
OPPO Reno8 Pro has a 6.7-inch Full-HD+ AMOLED 120Hz panel powered by a MediaTek Dimensity 8100-Max SoC with up to 12 GB of RAM and 256 GB of storage. The show is run by a 4,500mAh battery with 80W SUPERVOOC charging support. The MariSilicon X-powered triple rear camera includes a 50MP primary, 8MP ultra-wide, and 2MP macro lens. A 32MP snapper on the front allows for selfies and video calling.
Next on the list is Vivo T1x, the first smartphone under Rs 12,000 with a 4-layer cooling system. Vivo unveiled the T1x on July 20, available in two colors: Gravity Black and Space Blue. It comes in three storage options:
- 4GB/64GB – Rs 11,999
- 4GB/128GB – Rs 12,999
- 6GB/128GB – Rs 14,999
The Vivo T1x sports a 6.58-inch Full-HD+ 90Hz LCD display that gets juice from a Snapdragon 680 processor with a 5000mAh battery that supports 18W fast charging. It sports an 8MP selfie camera and a 50MP primary and 2MP macro dual rear camera.
Redmi K50i 5G
Launched on July 20, the Redmi K50i is the star of the show for this week. It is the first Redmi K series smartphone to be launched in India after three years. While it may be new to the Indian audience, the phone has the same design and specs as the Redmi Note 11T Pro. The Redmi K50i 5G is available in Stealth Black, Phantom Blue and Quick Silver colors and is available in two variants:
- 6GB/128GB – Rs 25,999
- 8GB/256GB – Rs 28,999
The Redmi K50i has a 6.6-inch Full-HD+ LCD 144Hz panel. A MediaTek Dimensity 8100 runs the show and a 5,080mAh battery with support for 67W fast charging keeps the lights on. Imaging on the Redmi K50i 5G is provided by an 8 MP front camera and a triple rear camera: 64 MP primary, 8 MP ultra wide angle and 2 MP macro.
Google Pixel 6a
Aside from the K50i, this week saw another marvel, the Google Pixel 6a. While the phone was introduced at Google’s I/O 2022 event, Google was mum about availability in India. After skipping the Google Pixel 5 and Pixel 5a and the Google Pixel 6 series, the Pixel 6a is Google’s first Pixel smartphone to hit the Indian coast on July 21. With a price tag of Rs 43,999 you get Google’s internal Tensor chip, a Titan M2 Security chip and 100GB of cloud storage from Google One. It has 6GB of RAM with 128GB of storage, an 8MP selfie shooter and a 4,306mAh battery that supports 18W fast charging.
However, fans were a bit disappointed to see a 60Hz 6.1-inch Full-HD+ OLED panel and a 12MP dual rear camera: (i) Most phones with a price tag of Rs 43,999 come with a screen greater than 60 Hz. (ii) The previous Pixel-a phones had the same camera as the best Pixel siblings, but the Pixel 6a didn’t get the same camera as the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro.
