Alex Hales’ 58 (41b) and Joe Root’s 34*(26b) combined with a nice three-fer from Daniel Sams got Trent Rockets off to a winning start this season. In their six-wicket victory at Nottingham, the hosts chased Birmingham Phoenix’s 143 with three balls left.

Hales scored 5 fours and 2 sixs on what he considered a “tricky, slow” surface, and his innings at the top were crucial to his side’s chances. He first added 52 for the second wicket with Colin Munro (36) and then 79 for the third wicket with Root. He eventually fell off the 92nd ball, caught and thrown by Tom Helm, but the Rockets were in reasonable control by then. Root only hit one boundary and one six, but got his 34 runs from 26 balls, maneuvering nicely across the field to pick ones and twos.

Previously, it was Daniel Sams (3 for 24) who helped keep the Phoenix up. He first made an impact at the top with Will Smeed’s wicket, then put on a show towards the end, helping his side end the innings well. The key to that effort was how he bowled at Liam Livingstone, out slowly and wide before finally getting his number. Only nine runs came from the last ten balls, including Sams’ attack from Livingstone, which finished at 47 out of 28 and seemed to be going pretty well so far. He particularly penalized Rashid Khan’s bowling, hitting four of his five sixes against the leg pinner.

Short scores: Birmingham Phoenix 143/7 in 100 balls (Livingstone 47; Sams 3-24) lost to Trent Rockets 147/4 in 97 balls (Hales 58, Root 34*; Helm 2-11) by six wickets
