India has reopened its embassy in Kabul, CNN News18 has learned in exclusive information shared by leading government sources.
The momentous move marks a major step towards restoring ties after India had to step back after the Taliban takeover of Afghanistan last year.
Indian teams led by a joint secretary-level official have reached Kabul, the sources said.
The embassy will soon begin functioning and a director-level junior official will lead the mission, she added.
The teams reached the capital of Afghanistan on Thursday with an Air Force plane.
They will begin establishing cooperation with the Taliban government and later on, the visa process will also begin, the sources said.
In a global exclusive interview with News18 this month, Afghan Defense Minister Mullah Yaqoob had invited India to reopen the embassy
“We ask that they come and open their embassy and send an ambassador here and agree to have our ambassador in India so that diplomatic relations can begin, which will also form the basis for defense and other relations,” he said. “We assure that India, like other countries, can come here and open their embassies, for which the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan can and will protect them and provide security.”
