India’s squad for the 2022 Asian Cup: The 2022 Asian Cup is just around the corner and preparations for the six-nation tournament are already in full swing. The 15th edition of the Asian Cup will be played from August 27 to September 11 in the UAE (Dubai and Sharjah).
The schedule for the tournament has been rolled out by the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) and the deadline to announce the respective player roster is August 8. Pakistan Cricket Board has already named its team while the other boards are yet to be revealed.
In this article, we take you through India’s likely roster for the 2022 Asian Cup.
India’s likely roster for the 2022 Asian Cup:
Senior opener KL Rahul makes his comeback in the 2022 Asian Cup after a long hiatus due to an injury (sport hernia). Rahul was set to regain his opening position in the Indian team in the upcoming ODI series against Zimbabwe, but he has not fully recovered and will play directly in the 2022 Asia Cup.
It is noteworthy that in the last six T20I innings, Rohit Sharma teamed up with Suryakumar Yadav and Rishabh Pant in the opening stages. India has tested several players to play a formidable game.
“KL Rahul doesn’t have to prove anything. He is a class player. When he plays T20 it is always like a specialist opener and that would continue. Surya and Rishabh will play as mid-range specialist hitters in the future,” a BCCI source told PTI under conditions of anonymity.
Interestingly, the young pacesetter Deepak Chahar will make his comeback to the Indian side in the upcoming ODI series against Zimbabwe and is likely to be named in the Indian squad for the Asian Cup.
The selectors have been impressed with Deepak’s consistent T20 performance prior to his injury, which has kept him away from the game of cricket since the IPL 2022.
In addition, Chahar can swing the delivery either way initially and becomes a crucial player to be on the squad. He will be the perfect backup for aaspacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar.
“Deepak was one of India’s consistent T20 bowlers before he got injured. He deserves a fair chance and we also need a like-for-like backup for Bhuvneshwar Kumar. Even now that he comes back, he would have to play a lot of games to get his rhythm back,” the source added.
The likes of Yuzvendra Chahal and R Ashwin alongside Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel are sure to be named in the Asia Cup roster. The inclusion of the all-rounder Harshal Patel in tempo bowling is dependent on his aptitude. He is currently suffering from a rib injury.

Meanwhile, Virat Kohli is also sure to be named in India’s roster for the Asia Cup and even for the T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia. Because of his past exploits and achievements, Kohli’s name will be hard to overlook for the selectors.
In addition, Kohli has the secure support of skipper Rohit Sharma and head coach Rahul Dravid, indicating that the team is poised to carry on with Virat Kohli despite his muted form.
“There have been no specific discussions about Kohli’s future in the shortest format and even if he doesn’t have a great Asia Cup, his years of experience and match-winning ability will be hard to ignore for the big event in Australia where experience always rules the stick ,” said the PTI report.
