Liverpool sign Ramsay as cover for Alexander-Arnold

Liverpool signed Scotland under-21 defender Calvin Ramsay from Aberdeen on Sunday as backup to right back Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Ramsay, 18, who has not played for Scotland’s senior team, joined for a reported fee of £4.2million ($5.15 million).

He only made his senior debut for Aberdeen in March last year and made 39 appearances for the team in Scotland’s top division, making nine assists and scoring one goal.

Joe Gomez has been Trent Alexander-Arnold’s backup in recent years, even though he is a center back by nature. Gomez has been linked with an Anfield departure.

“It was a dream come true to play for Aberdeen, and to now be at one of the biggest, if not the biggest club in the world, it’s a huge achievement and I’m looking forward to showing the fans what I have,” Ramsay said.

“Hopefully I can come in pre-season, show everyone at the club, the staff, players what I’ve got and then we’ll see what happens.”

Ramsay is Liverpool’s third off-season signing after the Uruguayan striker’s arrival Darwin Nunez and 19-year-old striker Fabio Carvalho.

“There’s clearly a path here — that’s also one of the reasons I chose it,” Ramsay said. “It’s not just a huge club, they give young players opportunities in the first team.”
