Man United identify Ruben Neves as Frenkie de Jong alternative

Man United have an eye on Ruben Neves, if a transfer for Frenkie de Jong does not come.

There is no doubt that FC Barcelona’s Frenkie de Jong will be at the forefront of Manchester United’s wishes this summer.

Apparently the Old Trafford club is considering a new offer for the Dutchman this week. They will also meet De Jong and his representatives, according to Fabrizio Romano.

Now Romano has spoken again about United’s transfer plans. This time to confirm that 25-year-old Ruben Neves has been identified by United as a potential alternative to De Jong.

According to the Italian journalist, Neves has been on United’s list since last summer, while the Portuguese international is “highly appreciated” by the Manchester club.

“I’m sure they have alternatives. Ruben Neves is a player who was already on the list last summer. He was always on Manchester United’s list and is very much appreciated.” Romano told GiveMeSport.

Of course it makes sense to have backup options in case a disaster happens and De Jong either goes elsewhere or stays with Barca. United could do a lot worse than Neves.

The Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielder has plenty of Premier League experience meaning he needs as little time as possible to settle in, which is exactly what United want at the moment.

Neves and De Jong are comparable players. Both love to take the ball into the half turn and keep things going. They play the ‘quarterback role’, if you will.

United are desperately looking for someone who can do that job at a high level. Either De Jong or Neves would be ideal for the club this summer and I would be genuinely happy to see which player gets signed in the end.

I just hope not too much time is spent chasing a midfielder. It already feels like United are lagging behind their rivals in the transfer market, so I hope things start to accelerate sooner rather than later.
