Manchester United could try to loan Frenkie de Jong to ‘give Barcelona time to calculate its wages’, it is alleged. The Netherlands international is reluctant to leave the Nou Camp for Old Trafford. But Erik ten Hag is so determined to reunite with his compatriot, the Red Devils refuse to give up.
Manchester United have agreed an initial deal of £63 million for De Jong, who previously played under Ten Hag at Ajax.
The Red Devils are confident the midfielder is willing to move to the Premier League, despite widespread reports in Catalonia that the Dutch international is not interested.
One sticking point, however, is the money that Barcelona owes the player.
At the start of the coronavirus pandemic in March 2020, De Jong – like many of his teammates – agreed to a temporary withholding from the salary.
That means Barcelona now owe their midfielder between £14million and £17million in deferred wages, an amount they are reluctant to pay despite major spending on Robert Lewandowski and Raphinha.
And journalist Dean Jones, in conversation with GiveMeSport, has now suggested United might try to get De Jong on loan so the Catalan giants can solve his wage problem.

In addition to Raphinha and Lewandowski, they also caught Andreas Christensen and Franck Kessie.
Christensen has decided to leave Chelsea for the Nou Camp, while Kessie has joined a free transfer from Serie A champions AC Milan.
Barcelona will also have to re-register Ousmane Dembele and Sergi Roberto, who have both signed new contracts in Catalonia.
So with De Jong it will be interesting to see what happens.
United are not the only team associated with the player, and Chelsea’s interest also comes from abroad.

The Blues could offer the midfielder a chance to play in the Champions League, something United can’t do after their sixth place finish last season.
But at the moment there is nothing concrete when it comes to Chelsea potentially cutting a deal.
Former Aston Villa star Gabriel Agbonlahor recently claimed that the Blues would suit De Jong better than United.
“I’ve been talking for a while that Manchester United don’t have that much of an appeal and their fans don’t like it. They can’t deal with the straight facts,” he told talkSPORT.
“De Jong, if he leaves Barcelona, he doesn’t want to go to Manchester United. There are quotes that have come out that he would rather have Bayern Munich, he would rather Chelsea.

“Because if I choose a team in the Premier League and I have a chance at Chelsea or Manchester United, I choose Chelsea.
