“Need To Be Realistic…”: Indian Cricket Team Coach Rahul Dravid’s Big Statement On Umran Malik

The T20I series of five matches between India and South Africa starts on Thursday at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi. The KL Rahul-led squad began training for the series on Monday. Umran Malik impressed with his performance in the IPL as he took 22 wickets for SunRisers Hyderabad and recorded the second fastest delivery of the season at 157 km/h. So it remains to be seen whether he will get a chance in the first T20I against the Proteas.

Head coach Rahul Dravid spoke to reporters at a press conference at Arun Jaitley Stadium and gave his take on Jammu’s pacesetter and what he can bring to the table.

“Yes, it’s exciting. He certainly bowled fast and with pace. Another thing that was interesting for me to look at the IPL from the outside is the number of Indian bowlers who bowl fast. And of course he coaches all three formats of the game “I would like to see that translated to the longer formats of the game. But it’s brilliant in terms of watching Umran in the nets, you can see he has that pace,” said Dravid.

“Obviously he’s learning. He’s a young boy and he’s getting better, better. The more he can play, the better he’ll get. From our perspective, very happy to have someone like him in the mix. We have to see how much playing time we can give him we have to be realistic we have a big squad it’s not possible to give everyone the time who plays XI I think I’m definitely someone who likes to have that consistency give people too and make him feel established on the positions it would be interesting to see how much playing time we give to Umran we also have Arshdeep here who is also brilliant We have experience in the form of guys who have been with us before Harshal , Bhuvi, Avesh. There are certain things we need to look at, but it’s nice and exciting to have a few young guys in the mix as well. It’s given us a chance to broaden our pool and see what they can do he added.

The senior players – Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and Jasprit Bumrah – are all equipped for the T20Is against South Africa. Youngsters like Umran Malik, Arshdeep Singh, who made an impression in the recently concluded IPL, have been given a chance in the series.

KL Rahul leads the Indian side in Rohit’s absence. Veteran wicketkeeper Dinesh Karthik has also made his way back into the squad after some strong performances for Royal Challengers Bangalore in the IPL.

Hardik Pandya, who led Gujarat Titans to IPL glory in their debut season, has also returned to the squad. Hardik last played for India at the 2021 T20 World Cup in the UAE.
