Nouryon launches Expancel® HP92 microspheres to reduce weight and withstand high pressure in underbody coatings and sealants for the automotive industry

Nouryon Introduces Expancel® HP92 Microspheres, a New Innovation That Pushes the Limits for Thermoplastic Microsphere Fillers in Automotive High Pressure Manufacturing Processes

Nouryon introduces Expancel® HP92 microspheres, a new innovation that pushes the boundaries for thermoplastic microsphere fillers in automotive high pressure manufacturing processes. Lightweight materials are in high demand from automakers to meet increasingly stringent emissions regulations and the strong consumer interest in fuel-efficient vehicles that do not compromise on performance or passenger comfort.

Unfold microspheres consist of a polymer shell that encapsulates a gas. When heated, the gas expands allowing the microspheres to be used as a lightweight filler and blowing agent to lighten end products and achieve various surface effects. They also reduce costs and environmental impact by using fewer raw materials and reducing weight.

“When used in bottom coatings and sealants, Expancel HP92 microspheres enable our automotive customers to apply high pressure to surfaces with up to four times better volume recovery to original shape after pressurization compared to older quality thermoplastic microspheres,” says Sylvia Winkel Pettersson, Vice President Engineered Polymers at Nouryon. “Our technology aims to combine and optimize the pressure resistance of glass microsphere grades with the light weight of thermoplastic microsphere fillers in one sophisticated solution.”

Unfold HP92 microspheres are currently being manufactured in Stockvik, Sweden, with production expected in Green Bay, Wisconsin, USA in early 2023, and will be available worldwide through the Nouryon distribution network.

Unfold microspheres have been manufactured for over 40 years and sold in more than 80 countries. Unfold HP92 microspheres were launched today at the Automotive Lightweight Materials Europe 2022 in Stuttgart, Germany.
