Shikhar Dhawan leads again as we look at the best-predicted 11 games for Team India ahead of the 2022 ODI series against Zimbabwe.
After beating England and the West Indies completely in the last two ODI series, Team India’s next assignment is against a minnow Zimbabwe. India last played against Zimbabwe six years ago in 2016, where they won that series 3-0. Interestingly, the last time India lost a match to Zimbabwe was in 2010. Since then they have won 12 matches.
With Zimbabwe on the other side, the ODI series squad sees many new names, even compared to the West Indies squad. The West Indies series itself had a String B side, but with India playing against a minnow Zimbabwe, it’s like a String C side India has picked to play.
Understandably, the ODI series will focus entirely on the Indian youth to make a good impact. Apart from Shikhar Dhawan, who is the oldest member of the squad, the average age of the selected group is around 25 years old.
So, with so many new names on the squad, what could be the best playing 11 for Team India for the 2022 ODI series against Zimbabwe? Let’s find out in this article. First, let’s take a look at the official squad for Team India for the ODI series.
India vs Zimbabwe 2022 – Official ODI Series Squad Players List for Team India:
Fitted: Rahul Tripathi, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Shikhar Dhawan & Shubman Gill
wks: lShan Kishan & Sanju Samson
All-rounders: Axar Patel, Deepak Hooda & Washington Sundar
bowlers: Avesh Khan, Deepak Chahar, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna & Shardul Thakur
Coach: Rahul Dravid // Captain: Shikhar Dhawan
openers: Shikhar Dhawan & Shubman Gill
This is one area that shouldn’t see any change from the 11 players who played against the West Indies. Team India’s captain Shikhar Dhawan and the West Indies ODI’s series player Shubman Gill should continue to open at least the first two matches. They were great as openers together against the West Indies, and would like to continue to do the same against Zimbabwe.
Middle order: Ruturaj Gaikwad, Ishan Kishan & Sanju Samson
The selection of the middle order would be the most difficult. Two big names are missing from the team that played against the West Indies. With the absence of the likes of Shreyas Iyer and Suryakumar Yadav, India should look for possible alternatives to the number 3 and number 4 positions, with Sanju following them at 5.
Well, technically India has 3 options to look at in the form of Ruturaj Gaikwad, Ishan Kishan and Rahul Tripathi. In an ideal scenario, Ruturaj and Kishan are backup openers, but one or both will definitely be in the playing 11. Of these three, Rahul Tripathi is better for the middle order. But since Kishan and Ruturaj were selected first, they deserve to play.
So expect both Ruturaj Gaikwad and Ishan Kishan to strike in a somewhat unorthodox mid-order position. Between Ruturaj, Kishan and Samson, Ruturaj should hit at 3, Ishan Kishan at 4 and Sanju Samson at 5, the role he also played against the West Indies. There may also be an opportunity to see Ruturaj at 3am, Sanju at 4am and Kishan at 5am.
All-rounders: Deepak Hooda & Axar Patel
Another easy choice to select in the absence of Hardik Pandya and Ravindra Jadeja. Deepak Hooda and Axar Patel did well as all-rounders against the West Indies. You may have missed it, but Deepak Hooda had the lowest savings rate of 4.4 among all bowlers. While Axar was the best all-rounder. This should therefore encourage Team India to continue with them for the Zimbabwe ODIs as well.
bowlers: Mohammed Siraj, Deepak Chahar, Shardul Thakur & Kuldeep Yadav
If we go to the bowlers, the selection will be tricky again. India has plenty of good options to look at, but who gets selected would be an interesting look. Of the available pool, Mohammed Siraj and Shardul Thakur are undoubtedly primary starters. They did well against the West Indies so deserve this chance first.
For the spinner spot, India has two options in the form of Kuldeep Yadav and Washington Sundar. Of these two, Kuldeep Yadav seems to be leading the way as a more senior candidate. Also, Kuldeep has been a very good bowler in ODIs. With the Asia Cup approach it would be good match training for him.
Coming to the final pacer position, India has three options to look at. This includes Prasidh Krishna, Deepak Chahar and Avesh Khan. Of these three, Deepak Chahar is higher, but Prasidh Krishna has had more success. While Avesh has the least experience. It’s a tough decision, but Deepak Chahar could have a shot at becoming the top pacer.
Zimbabwe vs India 2022: Best Predicted Games 11 for ODI Series
Shikhar Dhawan (C)Shubman Gill, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Ishan Kishan, Sanju Samson (WK), Deepak Hooda, Axar Patel, Deepak Chahar, Shardul Thakur, Kuldeep Yadav & Mohammed Siraj.
So that completes the best predicted 11 games for Team India for the 2022 ODI series against Zimbabwe. Of the above players, 9-10 are confirmed starters. The only points of discussion would be the choice of middle-order second batter and third pacer. Would be interesting to see what strategy India adopts.
