Polestar 5 electric 4-door GT to debut exclusive new Polestar electric powertrain

Polestar will publicly display a development prototype of the Polestar 5 for the first time at the Goodwood Festival of Speed (June 23-26) in 2022. Polestar 5 is a high-performance electric 4-door GT with proper sports car references, and the production evolution of the Precept concept car first shown in 2020.

Pete Allen, Head of Polestar UK R&D, said: “Polestar 5 will be a fantastic 4-door GT and a true Polestar at heart. The platform combines the features of a compact car with modern technological advances to bring lightweight, highly rigid sports car chassis technology into mass production.”

The British team took the opportunity to work with a new mechanical platform to design and develop a unique glued aluminum chassis, a key factor in delivering the signature vehicle dynamics to create a driving experience just as desirable as the design.

In Sweden, the development of a new high-performance electric powertrain is underway. A new rear electric motor delivers superior output, along with an 800-volt architecture. Combined with a powerful electric motor up front, the complete twin-motor powertrain aims to deliver 884 horsepower (650 kW) and 663 lb-ft (900 Nm).

Jörg Brandscheid, CTO and Head of R&D at Polestar, said: “The new powertrain we are working on will set a new brand benchmark for our high-performance cars. The combination of strong electric motor engineering with advances in lightweight platform technology leads to truly stunning driver cars.”

The Polestar 5 will run up the iconic Goodwood Hill twice a day during the “First Glance” group event. The car is scheduled to launch in 2024 and is the third of three new EVs that Polestar is expected to launch over the next three years, following the Polestar 3 and Polestar 4 electric SUVs.

Polestar’s YouTube documentary series shows the company transforming the Precept concept into the production Polestar 5 in much more detail than is usually revealed during a car project.

Thomas Ingenlath, CEO of Polestar, said: “Polestar 5 is a business-defining project. Forward-thinking design and advanced engineering set the tone for the future of Polestar. We have a lot of talent on board that will allow us to create truly iconic EVs.”
