The winger’s pay could be an issue for potential candidates, although he will certainly attract widespread interest
Paris Saint-Germain are open to selling Neymar during the summer transfer window if an acceptable offer is made, but the Brazilian would be hesitant to leave. GOAL understands.
The attacker arrived at Parc des Princes in 2018 on a transfer from Barcelona for a world record fee, in what was a serious statement of intent from the Ligue 1 club to cement their position as European heavyweights.
But failing to win the final trophy – the Champions League – and Kylian Mbappe’s decision to extend his stay at the club after a protracted transfer saga with Real Madrid means the main team would consider parting ways with the 30-year-old , especially after a turbulent 2021-22 campaign.
Why would Neymar leave PSG?
Despite regaining the Ligue 1 crown under Mauricio Pochettino this season, many believe PSG have endured a disappointing campaign given their early departure from the Champions League to Real Madrid.
Neymar has faced the most criticism from the club’s supporters, with both he and Lionel Messi being roundly booed in the spring after their European collapse.
The Brazilian player’s attitude and the stagnation on the pitch were scrutinized by the club. GOAL understands.
Mbappe’s decision to stay at PSG could also affect any decision-making process over Neymar’s future, with the France international believed to have some influence over transfer policies and player selection following his lucrative new deal. Mbappe’s relationship with Neymar is said to have cooled in recent years.
Does Neymar want to leave PSG?
Despite these matters, however, the attacker does not want to leave Parc des Princes and otherwise plans to continue at PSG next season.
Neymar only wrote new terms last year to see him through 2025 at the club, and after a season of teething trouble for several headliners, there may be hope that PSG’s collective squad of world-class talent can perform much better in 2022-23.
With the 2022 World Cup in Qatar coming up, where his Brazilian side is widely tipped as one of the favourites, the 30-year-old will have every reason to prove the doubters wrong at PSG – and show why the club king money for him in the first place.
Where can Neymar go if he leaves PSG?
If the Brazilian were to leave Parc des Princes, the number of parties that could realistically sign him is limited given the high fee he is likely to demand.
While Neymar is likely to be sold for an effective fraction of the world record amount PSG originally paid for his services, his projected costs are likely to put a large number of parties – including former club Barcelona – out of the hunt.
De Blaugrana has reportedly had previous informal talks surrounding a trade with Ousmane Dembele midway through the 2021-2022 season, but with the latter poised to leave the Camp Nou as a free agent, such a move is no longer relevant.
Newcastle could meet both transfer and salary requirements, but Neymar is not believed to be interested in joining the Magpies.
