Chris Hemsworth, who plays the character ‘Thor’ in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, came up with the ultimate credit for iconic Indian weightlifter Mirabai Chanu. Chanu, who won silver at the Tokyo Olympics last year, won gold in the women’s 49kg category at the ongoing 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. Responding to a tweet saying “it’s time for Thor to give up his hammer” regarding Mirabai, the Hollywood megastar came up with a “worthy” response. “She’s worth it! Congratulations, Saikhom, you legend,” Hemsworth tweeted.

The line borrows from his character in the MCU. In the movies, Thor’s hammer, the Mjolnir, can only be picked up by those deemed “worthy”.
Mirabai Chanu lifted a total of 201 kg to win gold at CWG 2022.
In Birmingham, Mirabai was miles ahead of the competition when she picked up 88kg in snatch and 113kg in clean and jerk.
Due to her excellent performance in the snatch round, setting the new Commonwealth record, Mirabai just had to complete her first attempt in the clean and jerk round and she did it with confidence, lifting 105kg.
Confident of gold, she lifted 113 kg in her second attempt. She tried 119kg in her third but couldn’t complete the lift but it didn’t matter as she took her second Commonwealth Games gold medal.
She had also won gold in Gold Coast in 2018.
Mirabai is one of the most decorated weightlifters in India. She already had a Commonwealth Games silver (2014) and gold (2018) in her cat before winning the yellow metal again in 2022. She also won a gold medal at the 2017 World Championships and also holds several Commonwealth Championships medals and an Asian Championships medal.
The pinnacle of her career came in Tokyo last year when she became India’s first silver medalist in weightlifting at the Olympics, improving on the bronze medal won by Karnam Malleswari in Sydney 2000.
