The ongoing five-game ODI run between Sri Lanka and Australia has turned interesting as the Dasun Shanaka-led side have come back with two consecutive wins after losing the first game to the guests. While the Lankans lost the T20I series to Australia 1-2, they now have a good chance to take the ODI series and avenge the defeat. Much was at stake when the two teams met on Sunday for the third ODI, but it was umpire Kumar Dharmasena, who received more attention than any Sri Lankan or Australian player.

Dharmasena caught his eye when he nearly made a flyout during the match while umpire on the leg side.

During Australia’s at bat, Alex Carey shorted out to square-leg umpire Dharmasena, whose reflexes forced him to make a try. But Dharmasena soon realized that he was the referee in the match and not a field player. At the very last moment, he withdrew from the line of the ball.

Speaking of Sunday’s game, Australian skipper Aaron Finch won the toss and chose to bat first at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. He led his side from the front with a 62-point knockout before players like Travis Head (70 out) and Alex Carey (49 out) were able to push the squad to 291/6 in 50 overs.

In return, Sri Lanka came home with six wickets in hand and nine balls left. Pathum Nissanka scored 137 runs, while Kusal Mendis backed him with an 87-point knockout before getting injured. Nissanka took the Player of the Match award.

With the win, Sri Lanka leads the series of five games 2-1. The sides will then face each other for the fourth match on June 21 at the same venue.
