Sustainable paths to art: Volkswagen provides zero emission mobility solutions for guests at documenta fifteen

The opening of the world’s largest contemporary art exhibition in Kassel also marks the introduction of new sustainable mobility solutions in Kassel: a fully electric shared car fleet, state-of-the-art EV charging stations and a recycled bicycle rental service represent Volkswagen Mobility Support for documenta fifteen.

During the course documenta fifteen, 35 Volkswagen ID.3 form a special WeShare fleet in Kassel. Visitors of 21 years or older and in possession of a valid driver’s license can use the cars with a simple click in an app. The car sharing solution, which has already been successfully rolled out in Berlin and Hamburg, offers users only electric cars and works in a so-called free-floating system. Within an area of 12 square kilometers, the cars can be used individually to travel to exhibition locations. Parking is allowed in any public parking lot within the WeShare area. The WeShare app can be downloaded from the Google Play store and the Apple App store. More information at:

All electric vehicle owners and drivers are served by Volkswagen with an extensive charging infrastructure, including seven flexible fast charging stations and 14 permanently installed charging stations with a total of 42 charging points, almost doubling the capacity of local charging points during the opening season of documenta. The electricity is supplied by Kasseler Städtische Werke AG and comes as 100% sustainable green electricity.

Opposite the documenta room, the Volkswagen mobility stand offers visitors 50 free rental bicycles. To demonstrate that mobility can also become more sustainable when the life cycle of products is extended, old bicycles were collected at Volkswagen’s factories in Kassel and Wolfsburg before being thoroughly repaired by Outlaw Kassel gGmbH, a local social company. The converted bikes are now an additional two-wheeled option for quick trips to the various locations used for documenta exhibitions.

Benita von Maltzahn, Head of Cultural Engagement at Volkswagen: “In its 15th edition, documenta discusses questions of resource allocation and conservation. In terms of mobility, electrically powered vehicles are leading the way into the future and Volkswagen is also using the Kassel plant to further develop and disseminate solutions for this type of mobility demand. We help with these solutions to add extra options for guests to tour between the exhibition grounds emission-free and sustainably.”

Volkswagen is the lead partner of documenta fifteen, which focuses specifically on collectivity, sustainability and fairness. The underlying concept was developed by the Indonesian artist group ruangrupa who also prepared the exhibition after the group was appointed by documenta’s International Finding Committee in 2019.

Documenta will present works by the most influential artists of our time between June 18 and September 25, 2022. The partnership with documenta expands Volkswagen’s international commitment to culture and the arts and strengthens artists, institutions and projects around industrial estates and beyond. The activities are conducted with a commitment to enable a wide audience to participate in creative work and ideas, providing the opportunity to develop new perspectives for innovations and discourses.
