Maruti Suzuki continues to dominate the sales chart in India in May. India’s largest automaker has eight of the top 10 cars sold in India last month, reaffirming its dominance in the small car segment. As Korean automaker Hyundai Motor and Tata Motors compete to become the second largest manufacturer, Maruti sold 1,34,222 units in May, showing a significant increase in sales compared to the same month last year. Maruti recently launched facelift versions of at least two of its eight models this year, while another one awaits a major facelift soon.

Here’s a rundown of the top 10 cars sold in India in May:

Maruti WagonR

Maruti’s popular hatchback WagonR remains the best-selling car in India. With 16,814 units sold last month, WagonR sales have increased dramatically compared to May last year, when the automaker sold just 2,086 units. The comparison is somewhat misleading, however, as all automakers struggled to sell anything a year ago due to the lockdown during the second wave of the Covid-19 pandemic. Compared to April of this year, WagonR sales have actually fallen by almost a thousand units.

Tata Nexon

The emergence of the Nexon sub-compact SUV as India’s best-selling SUV is one of Tata Motors’ greatest success stories. Tata sold 14,614 copies of the Nexon SUV last month, even improving the number of 13,471 copies in April. Available in both ICE and EV versions, the Nexon SUV now threatens to dethrone Maruti from the top spot of the best-selling car models in India.

Maruti Swift

Swift hatchback has returned to the top 10 after some time. Maruti sold 14,133 Swifts in May, securing third place among all automakers. The sales increase is significant, as Maruti was unable to sell even 9,000 Swift units in April this year. In May last year, Maruti Swift was the second best-selling car after Hyundai Creta with just over 7,000 units shipped.

Maruti Baleno

The new generation Baleno is expected to be in the top 10 list. At number four, Baleno boasts a sales figure of 13,970 units in May. It’s a significant increase in month-over-month sales after Maruti sold 10,938 units in the previous month. Maruti launched the new Baleno earlier this year with a host of features and technical upgrades.

Maruti Alt

There have been words as to whether Maruti plans to discontinue the Alto hatchback altogether. But the sales figures are still on the side of one of the oldest surviving car models in India. In May, Maruti sold 12,933 Alto units. Maruti will also be pleased with Alto’s growth, even as the automaker sold just 10,443 units in April.

Maruti Ertiga

It seems that a long wait hampered Ertiga’s sales figures in May. The three-row MPV finished at number six last month with 12,226 units sold in India. Sales have fallen compared to April, when Maruti sold 14,889 Ertiga units. Maruti launched the new generation Ertiga in April with new gearbox and other updated features.

Maruti Dzire

Long overdue for a major facelift, Maruti’s subcompact sedan remains one of the best-selling cars in India. Maruti sold 11,603 units of Dzire last month, up from 10,701 units in April. Dzire is the only sedan to remain among the best-selling cars in India.

Hyundai Crete

After a brief surge in sales, Hyundai’s flagship SUV Creta saw another drop last month. Hyundai sold 10,973 units of Creta in April this year, compared to 12,651 units of the five-seat SUV. Hyundai is expected to drive the facelift version of the Creta later this year.

Maruti EECO

Like Dzire, Eeco is the only car in its segment that continues to be among the very best. Even at a time when Maruti plans to give it a facelift, the automaker managed to sell 10,482 units last month. By April, Maruti had sold 11,154 units of the van in India.

Maruti Vitara Brezza

At number 10 on the list is a car that will soon get a major facelift. Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza, who returns in a new avatar on June 30, makes up the top 10 cars sold in India in May. Maruti sold 10,312 units of the SUV, clearing Tata Punch’s tally from 10,241 with just 71 units. By April, Maruti had sold 11,764 units.
