We all know that Toyota and Maruti are collaborating to develop an all-new mid-sized SUV for the Indian market. Toyota’s upcoming SUV is codenamed: D22 while the version of the Maruti is codenamed: YFG. It is reported that Toyota’s all-new SUV will be unveiled worldwide on July 1, 2022. The upcoming SUV will compete in the segment with cars like Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos. The upcoming Toyota D22 SUV is expected to go on sale later this year. It is expected to hit the market sometime around the holidays.
Both Maruti and Toyota share some models in the Indian market with minor changes and different identity. The upcoming SUV will also follow the same path. The only difference would be that this time Toyota will produce it and supply it to Maruti. The upcoming D22 SUV will be produced by Toyota at their Bidadi plant in Karnataka. The same SUV will be sold by Maruti under a different name and with cosmetic changes. The brand new SUV is expected to be sold through Nexa dealers. Toyota’s D22 SUV will be unveiled first and Maruti’s version of the SUV will be unveiled some time later.
Toyota and Maruti’s upcoming SUV will be based on the DNGA platform. Both SUVs will share many components such as the engine, exterior, interior design and also full or strong hybrid system. Toyota will supply the hybrid system for the SUVs. The upcoming D22 SUV is expected to come with two petrol engines. The lower specification models will come with a mild hybrid system that we’ve seen on Maruti cars. The higher variants or models get a stronger hybrid system. With this system, the car can be used as an EV for some distance. This system is similar to what Toyota offers in Camry hybrid and Prius. Both models are expected to be powered by a 1.5-litre petrol engine that will be offered with a manual and six-speed automatic transmission or a CVT gearbox.
As mentioned above, Toyota will manufacture this SUV here in India and to keep costs in check, some components are expected to be sourced locally. Both the D22 and the YFG SUV are expected to come with quite a few features. Recently, spy photos of the interior of the Maruti YFG SUV surfaced online revealing features such as a HUD, flat bottom steering, automatic climate control, cruise control, touchscreen infotainment system and so on. The upcoming SUVs are expected to come with features such as ventilated seats, electric sunroof, leatherette upholstery, driving modes, connected car features, and so on. Both SUVs have been spotted on our roads during the testing phase and it is quite clear that both Toyota and Maruti have taken a different approach when it comes to the front end. Toyota’s D22 is expected to come with a design similar to some of the international models.
