US President Joe Biden evacuated after plane entered airspace near beach home | World News

In a statement, the White House said there was no threat to Biden, First Lady Jill Biden and their family. The private plane, it said, accidentally entered restricted airspace near the president’s vacation home in Delaware.

A small private plane accidentally entered restricted airspace near President Joe Biden’s vacation home in Delaware on Saturday, triggering the brief evacuation of the president and first lady, the White House and the Secret Service said.

The White House said there was no threat to Biden or his family and precautions had been taken. After the situation was assessed, Biden and his wife, Jill, returned to their home in Rehoboth Beach.

The secret service said in a statement that the plane was immediately escorted out of restricted airspace after it “accidentally entered a secured area”. The agency said it would interview the pilot who, according to a preliminary investigation, was not on the correct radio channel and was not following published flight guidance.

As is common for presidential travel outside of Washington, the Federal Aviation Administration issued flight restrictions earlier this week ahead of Biden’s seaside town visit. The restrictions include a no-fly zone with a 10-mile radius and a 30-mile restricted zone.

A reporter from CBS News said on Twitter that he saw Biden drive to a fire station in Rehoboth Beach. The group of reporters traveling with the president were not part of the motorcade.

Federal regulations require pilots to check for flight restrictions on their route before takeoff. Nevertheless, accidental airspace violations, especially around temporary restricted zones, are common.

US military jets and Coast Guard helicopters are often used to intercept aircraft violating flight restrictions around the president. Intercepted aircraft are diverted to a nearby airport where aircrews are interviewed by law enforcement officers and may face criminal or civil penalties.
