WhatsApp is working on a way to catalog everyone who left your group chats

This change is being beta tested on iOS, but could also come to Android

Recently, WhatsApp has been spotted developing new features for its arsenal, mainly targeting group chats. The service recently increased the member limit in group chats from 100 to 512 and announced Communities, an entirely new way to message like-minded people. With such large groups, admins and members want to keep an eye on members who have recently left the conversation. WhatsApp is beta testing a feature, so there’s no need to ask around or guess.

WhatsApp beta version 22.16.0.75 on iPhone allows group members and admins to see who has left or been deleted from the group in the last 60 days (via WABetaInfo). Below the list of current participants on the ‘Group info’ tab, a new option called ‘See previous participants’ is now visible. The list of deleted members also gets a special search bar, which can be useful for large threads where there is usually a constant exodus of members and an influx of new ones. Small businesses that use WhatsApp groups for internal communication or interaction with customers may also appreciate the feature.

In addition, the current system of notifying the chat when a member leaves or starts up will be removed. Other than admins, no one gets in-chat messages for such events – perhaps to make moderation easier. So the names of members who have left the group are only included in the ‘Past participants’ list.

The feature is currently making its way to WhatsApp TestFlight betas on iOS, but given the cross-platform nature of the app, we think it should come to the Android and desktop apps sooner rather than later. On Android, WhatsApp was recently seen testing a way to help admins moderate the content of groups by deleting messages. We hope that feature comes too, so chats become a little more manageable.
